In addition
to glass beads I also make fused glass wall hangings. These pieces are designed
to be displayed on the wall like paintings. I include a French cleat and
hardware for hanging.
In contrast to most glass art, my work emphasizes opacity rather
than transparency. I overlay a white or light colored glass with a
colored transparent piece. This creates depth while at the same time
stopping the eye and focusing it on the center of interest-the
flower.
I use a layered fusing process. I fire each piece twice, adding one
layer to the original each time. Each layer is fired at successively
lower temperatures to control the rate of melting. This creates a
more three-dimensional look. The last firing usually includes some
glass pieces I make at the torch. These include flower centers,
stamen and other fine details.
